The journey from Bhorgiri to Bhimashankar in the forest area of Bhimashankar is a pleasant experience. The trek starts from Bhorgiri village and ends near Bhimashankar temple, making its way through the dense forest of Bhimashankar. This jungle trek is a popular and scenic trail that offers a thrilling hiking experience. Also, it is an easy trek so anyone of any age can complete this trek.

The trek takes you through a dense forest, offering a beautiful natural setting. Follow the marked trail and climb uphill as you navigate through the jungle. As you approach Bhimashankar, you’ll enter the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is home to various wildlife species, including the state animals of Maharashtra, the “Shekru” (Indian Giant Squirrel).

After trekking for several hours, you’ll finally reach Bhimashankar. Visit the famous Bhimashankar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and seek blessings. The temple is a major pilgrimage site and attracts devotees from far and wide.

Bhimashankar Temple

The Bhimashankar Temple is a famous Hindu temple and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.

Location: The Bhimashankar Temple is situated in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats at an elevation of about 3,250 feet (1,050 meters) above sea level. It is surrounded by lush green forests and scenic beauty, making it a popular pilgrimage site and a trekking destination.

Architecture: The temple is built in the Nagara style of architecture, which is typical of many ancient Hindu temples. It features intricately carved stone walls and pillars, with a prominent spire (shikhara) at the top. The temple complex also includes a large sabha mandap (assembly hall) and a small Nandi (bull) shrine.

Religious Significance: The Bhimashankar Temple holds great religious significance for devotees of Lord Shiva. It is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva took the form of Bhima, one of his fierce manifestations, to defeat the demon Tripurasura. The temple is visited by a large number of pilgrims, especially during the holy month of Shravan (July-August), and on Mondays and Shivaratri.

Visiting the Temple: The Bhimashankar Temple can be reached by road from Pune or Mumbai. There are also trekking routes that lead to the temple, offering an adventurous journey through the forests. Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary

Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located approximately 125 kilometers (78 miles) from Pune city and is well-connected by road in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India. It is named after the Bhimashankar Temple, a famous Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is located within the sanctuary.

Covering an area of approximately 131 square kilometers (51 square miles), Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its rich biodiversity and lush greenery. It is home to various species of plants, animals, and birds, making it a significant ecological hotspot in the region.

One of the significant attractions in the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is the Indian Giant Squirrel, also known as the “Malabar Giant Squirrel”. It is known for its vibrant and striking fur coloration, with shades of black, brown, and orange.

The sanctuary’s dense forests are primarily composed of evergreen and semi-evergreen trees, along with patches of grasslands and bamboo groves. The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary also serves as the origin of the Bhima River, which flows through Maharashtra.

The sanctuary offers opportunities for nature enthusiasts, wildlife lovers, and trekkers to explore its trails and enjoy the picturesque surroundings. There are trekking routes that lead to the Bhimashankar Temple and other scenic spots within the sanctuary.

Day 1Bhorgiri to Bhimashankar Night Trek > Pune

We arrive at the starting point of our trek i.e. Bhorgiri village. (Washrooms are not available.)
Our field experts will provide pre-trek information and instructions to all participants.

Begin the trek towards Bhimashankar, following the trail through the dense forests. Trek through the scenic landscapes and enjoy the natural beauty along the way.
Visit the “Gupta-Bhimashankar Temple” the oldest form of Bhimashankar temple. Continue on the trail, experiencing the beauty of the surroundings.

Reach Bhimashankar and visit the Bhimashankar Temple. Explore the temple complex and offer prayers. Take some time to relax and soak in the spiritual atmosphere.

08:00 – 10:00
A short drive of 5 km to the restaurant. (Washrooms are available)
Get quick freshen up and have breakfast.

10:00 – 14:00
Start the journey back to Pune with very pleasant memories.
