Pratapgad Fort is known for the Battle of Pratapgad, which took place in 1659. It was a significant battle between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan, a prominent general of the Bijapur Sultanate. During the encounter, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj killed Afzal Khan in single combat, leading to a decisive victory for the Marathas.

At this historical place, there is a traditional route through the thick forest which is leading to the Pratapgad Fort called “Rajmarg”. We can have a real experience of the forest of the Jaoli region. It also explains why the fort stands at such a strategic location.

The “Rajmarg” route starts from the base village i.e. Wada-Kumbhroshi Village and ends at the Pratapgad Fort main entry gate or near the present parking lot. It is almost parallel to the present Ghat road. It is not used by many and is unknown to many hikers, nature lovers, etc.

So don’t miss the chance to see this traditional route to Pratapgag Fort. Let’s climb this route and see this historic fort and experience its glory.

The Pratapgad Fort

Pratapgad Fort is a historical fort located in the Satara district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is situated on a hill in the Western Ghats and is known for its strategic location and architectural magnificence.

The architecture of Pratapgad Fort showcases the military engineering prowess of the Marathas. The fort consists of two main sections: the Citadel and the Machi. The Citadel contains various buildings, including the Mahadev Temple, Bhavani Temple, and a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Machi houses granaries, water tanks, and a pathway leading to the Citadel.

The fort showcases the exquisite Maratha architecture of the 17th century. It has a unique layout with multiple levels and bastions, designed to enhance its defensive capabilities. The fort’s walls, gateways, and watchtowers are made of stone and provide a glimpse into the military prowess of that era.
