BhimashankarWildlife Sanctuary

Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located approximately 125 kilometres (78 miles) from Pune city and is well-connected by road in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India. It is named after the Bhimashankar Temple, a famous Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is located within the sanctuary.

Covering an area of approximately 131 square kilometres (51 square miles), Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its rich biodiversity and lush greenery. It is home to various species of plants, animals, and birds, making it a significant ecological hotspot in the region.

One of the significant attractions in the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is the Indian Giant Squirrel, also known as the “Malabar Giant Squirrel”. It is known for its vibrant and striking fur colouration, with shades of black, brown, and orange.

The sanctuary’s dense forests are primarily composed of evergreen and semi-evergreen trees, along with patches of grasslands and bamboo groves. The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary also serves as the origin of the Bhima River, which flows through Maharashtra.

Pune » Bhorgiri to Bhimashankar » Pune

Depart from Pune by 06:00 hrs.
Meet our representative at your pick-up point. We will then proceed by private vehicle to the starting point of our trek. We’ll stop at a local restaurant near Bhorgiri village for breakfast.

The trek starts from the village of Bhorgiri and ends at the Bhimashankar temple. The trek begins with a gradual ascent through the Bhorgiri forest. The trail passes through dense forests, over streams and waterfalls, and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The monsoon season is the best time to do this trek, as the waterfalls are at their fullest and the forests are lush and green.

After trekking for 4 to 5 hours, you’ll finally reach Bhimashankar. Visit the famous Bhimashankar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and seek blessings. The temple is a major pilgrimage site and attracts devotees from far and wide.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Return to Pune; filled with memories of our monsoon special adventure trek from Bhorgiri to Bhimashankar.
